Why I'm Not Involved in Politics...
Updated: May 23, 2025
I’ve been told on occasion that I should get involved in politics, run for office, and bring my thought processes, opinions, philosophies and pragmatism to a legislative arena.
That’s not ever going to happen; I’m simply not electable. Not because of any legal situation, but that because, while there may be some people out there who like my ideas, the general voting public wouldn’t want any part of me, and the established parties would immediately freeze me out. It would be a waste of everybody’s time and effort.
Let’s look at the facts:
- I’m an out, sexually active gay man with a history of behavior alone and with consenting adults which our society’s idiotically unhealthy, Puritan-informed social sensibilities would deem questionable.
Yes, there are stories and pictures out there in the world beyond my direct control.
No, I don’t regret them, and I’m not ashamed of them.
Nudity, sensuality, and sexual expression – whether celebrated alone or with consenting adults, whether kept secret or shared with an appreciative public – are fun and healthy.
Realistically, that past would have no bearing upon how my brain works in the context of legislative process, short of working tirelessly to shut down any attempt of the government to legislate Not Minding Your Own Damn Business – but as far as I can tell, the overwhelming majority of the American voting public DOES think that its politicians’ sex lives IS their business, which is just stupid.
Let me spell it out for you: Honey, if you ain’t in my bed, it ain’t any of yo business, whether I’m public about it or not.
- I hold the belief that the love of money is the root of all evil1, and that corporations and religious institutions beyond a certain level of income and millionaires, should be forced to re-invest significant percentages of their gross income into the community, and taxed even higher percentages of their net income if they refuse.
Additionally, the highest income/benefits package in any given organization shouldn’t exceed 15x that of the lowest-paid, even part-time, individual.
- I’m a Pagan who is exceedingly plainspoken and deeply critical of organized religion in general and of the highly visible hypocrisy of mainstream Christianity in specific.
- I will never say “God bless you” or “God bless America” because
a.) I don’t believe in the concept of “God” as it is generally defined by Abrahamic religions (which are the default assumption of the voting public), and
b.) I believe that even casual aping of religious belief is deeply, profoundly, and morally repugnant.
(It’s also not up to God to bless America or other people; it’s up to us. Get off your goddamn self-absorbed ass and get busy.)
- The voting public expects its politicians to wear the uniform of a suit and tie.
I will never make a habit of wearing a suit because as far as I’m concerned, my need for personal comfort outweighs the public’s need to see me conform to arbitrary social conventions.
- I will never habitually wear an American Flag pin because I think fetishism of symbols is unhealthy.
- I will never salute a member of the military because I am a civilian.
I don’t have that privilege and never will, EVEN IF I BECOME PRESIDENT.
- I will never be able to operate within the auspices of either mainstream party because the political philosophy of BOTH parties has lost sight of the need for, and the value of, compromise, negotiation, and pragmatism for the common good.
I love my country and find many good things to say about it, but I recognize that our society and our government are deeply – if not fatally – flawed, and I will not hesitate to say so, because we are at a point where focusing on the positive to the exclusion of all else will only hasten our (possibly already unavoidable) demise.
In short, I have essentially lost faith in the will of the American society to salvage itself, because the bulk of that society is simply unwilling to a.) recognize that it is in trouble, or b.) try to be objective enough to even consider the possibility.
I realize that most of these reasons paint the American voting public as vapid, shallow, backwards, prone to kneejerk emotional response, and sociopolitically regressive.
Well, for fuck’s sake: look around you.
LOOK. AROUND. YOU.
I can’t help a society that’s uninterested in helping itself.
- 1 Timothy 6:10.
That’s the full quote from the Bible… and it took a Pagan to make you look it up.
